Vishal Patil, who is an independent Member of Parliament from Maharashtra, met with the president of the Congress party, Mallikarjun Kharge, and decided to support the Congress party. Patil, whose grandfather was a past chief minister of Maharashtra, won the Lok Sabha election representing the Sangli area. Even though he used to be in the Congress party, he ran as an independent candidate because the Sangli seat was given to another party in a sharing agreement among the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi coalition.
Mr. Kharge, a leader, wrote on a social media platform about how happy he is to have the support of Vishal Patil, the elected Member of Parliament from Sangli, who has decided to join the Congress party. Patil also met with two previous leaders of the Congress party, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the Congress party won 99 seats, the most among the opposition parties grouped together in the INDIA bloc. Altogether, the opposition coalition, made up of different parties, won a total of 233 seats in the election.
Mr. Venugopal, who is a leader in the Congress party, said that the party has strong ties in Sangli. He praised Patil’s decision to support the party without any conditions, saying it reflects this strong connection. He also mentioned that Patil’s choice honors the memory of Vasantdada Patil, a respected leader in the Congress party. Additionally, Patil’s father, Prakashbapu Patil, served as a Member of Parliament for the Congress party for five terms. After his father’s passing, Pratik Patil, his son, won a special election for the Sangli seat. Pratik also served as a minister in the UPA government. Recently, Pratik retired from politics, and now Vishal Patil, the grandson of Vasantdada Patil, has taken his place.
